Eladio Jose Armesto grew up in Miami, Florida. He graduated from Miami Senior High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration from St. Thomas University. He studied Spanish, Philosophy and Literature at Maria Cristina University in El Escorial, Spain. He studied Law in Los Angeles, California, but has since devoted himself to Government Relations, Corporate Communications, and the Media.
He served as Deputy Commissioner in charge of the Miami Service Office of the Florida Department of Insurance under Democratic State Treasurer and Insurance Commissioner, Bill Gunter and represented Gunter throughout Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. In 1994 he was appointed a Florida Commissioner of Deeds by Democratic Governor Lawton Chiles.
From 1990 to 2010, Eladio was the Publisher of El Nuevo Patria (The New Homeland, in English), South Florida's First Cuban-American newspaper, founded July 25th, 1959. He developed it into one of the most successful and widely respected Hispanic community publications in South Florida. Eladio was vice president of Government Affairs for New Era Communications Corporation, successfully crafting and executing media campaigns for a diverse array of clients, including federal, state and local political candidates. He serves on the Board of Directors of several nonprofit corporations and foundations.
Eladio is actively involved in his community’s political life. At 21, he was appointed Youth Affairs Advisor to the late U.S. Democratic Congressman Claude Pepper(D-FL) and in 1996, he ran in a special election for Mayor of Miami, coming in second to an incumbent city commissioner who outspent him ten to one.
He currently chairs the Florida Democratic League, the largest minority-led Democratic voters’ organization in the state. He has served on the City of Miami's International Trade Board, the Miami Police Department’s Office of Professional Compliance Board, and as Vice Chairman of the City of Miami's influential Planning Advisory Board.
He has distinguished himself on Miami-Dade County’s Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board as well as the Miami-Dade Historic Preservation Board. He serves as treasurer of the U.S. Hispanic Publishers Federation, vice president of the Cuban-American Publishers Association, and is currently president of The National Cuban-American Journalists Union.
He is active with his children in the Boy Scouts of America, the Civil Air Patrol, and has chaired the Parenting Committee of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools PTA. Eladio is the recipient of numerous awards and commendations for Everglades Conservation, Historic Preservation, minority voter registration and mobilization campaigns, Public Education, and other civic projects. He is currently Grand Knight of Council 5110 of the Knights of Columbus international fraternal order, an Eagle Scout and a West Point Military Academy nominee. He lives in Miami, Florida with his wife Wendy Armesto and his children.
